What is FFA?
By Frances C. Foley, May 2006.

The Future Farmers of America is the student organization for vocational agricultural students. The organization functions at the regional, state and national levels, having a national convention every October. The Connecticut FFA was an established organization when Connecticut began the regional VoAg program and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2005.

FFA is an integral part of VoAg education nation wide. Elements like a strict code of ethics and an official dress code instills honor, respect and dedication within the students. Monthly meetings are held and yearly officers are elected. All FFA members who choose to run for an officer position must learn parliamentary procedures. Every candidate must pass a parliamentary procedures test to run for office.

CDE’s, (Career Development Events) are used to educate students in current and emerging work force areas. Run as an extra curricular activity, CDE teams compete at the regional state and national levels. Students who join the teams must study the information and learn associated skills to prepare for competitions.

Current CDE’s at Lyman Hall Include:

  1. Ag Communications
  2. Ag Mechanics
  3. Ag Sales
  4. Dairy Production
  5. Floriculture
